NORWALK — Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now, the city's agency for the
impoverished, is hosting a breakfast Monday to call attention to its strategic
plan for 2008 and its 2007 poverty data report.

Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will be on
hand for the breakfast, as NEON President Joseph Mann hopes to rally
legislative backing to gain funds for the organization.

"What we're trying to do, certainly, is get support for some of the things NEON
is trying to do, which are those things that help move people away from
poverty," said Mann. "Our objective is to help people become self-sufficient."

At the breakfast, Mann will unveil the organization's strategic plan to decrease
poverty in Norwalk in order to obtain support from the legislators.

"We're just going to talk about why it's important, what we're trying to do and
appeal to people to try and support us in the effort," Mann said.

NEON also wishes to gain support from the city's business community, as
Mann believes unification between the business community and nonprofits
will foster a great stride towards NEON's goal.

"If you invest in NEON, you invest in the community," Mann said.

The organization's strategic plan focuses on the items the agency feels it can
pursue in regards to reducing poverty in the community. The plan focuses on
the state's mission to reduce child poverty by 2014.

"There's a lot of people out here that simply cannot make it on their own," said
Mann. "So, when we talk about moving people to self-sufficiency, they have a
good job. They're able to take care of their families and that helps everybody."
