NEON earns national accreditation

The signs near the front
door illustrate NEON's
progress. Hanging next to
the old one that directs
visitors to the "Day Care
Office" is a newer sign that
reads, "Welcome to NEON
Childhood Development
Program."

The program that serves
182 toddlers and
preschoolers at the
Ben Franklin Center
recently received accreditation
from the National Association for Education of Young Children, making
it one of the first programs in the country to achieve the new national
standards.

"The Wall Street Journal called NAEYC accreditation the 'gold
standard,'" said Herbert Grant, chairman of the board of directors of
Norwalk Economic Opportunity Now, Inc.

To achieve accreditation, the NEON program met the criteria in 10
areas including teaching, curriculum, assessment of child progress
and management. In nine out of 10 categories, it achieved a score of
100 percent.

No longer a day care program, NEON uses the "Creative Curriculum
for Preschool." The lesson plans teach children, some as young as 15
months, early learning skills to help prepare them for school. In the
bright, colorful classrooms, children have access to computers, books
and toys. Every class is staffed with at least one bilingual teacher and
NEON maintains a ratio of one teacher to every 10 children.

Jill Lamberti, coordinator of the program, said the NEON Childhood
Development Program also screens children for early signs of
learning disabilities and health issues, and makes referrals for further
treatment when necessary. Along the way, they teach parents how to
advocate
on behalf of their children.

Parent participation is a requirement of the program, one that is
consistent with NEON's mission
that Grant described as "helping people help themselves."

It is also an area that helped earn the program its accreditation. NEON
scored 100 percent in its evaluation of "families" and "community
relationships."

"When children are here they are in good hands," said Joseph Mann,
NEON president and CEO. "They are in the best place they can be ."
